Blue Origin has announced the Northstar booster engine with 715,000 pounds of thrust. Read its design improvements and New Glenn connection.
Blue Origin’s Northstar booster engine is attracting technology searches in Pakistan after the company announced a new propulsion system for its New Glenn programme. The announcement is significant because rocket engines are a central constraint in launch cadence, manufacturing cost and the ability to lift heavier payloads.

Northstar Engine: Main Numbers
| Specification | Blue Origin announcement |
|---|---|
| Propellant | Liquid oxygen and liquefied natural gas |
| Thrust | 715,000 pounds-force |
| Mass change vs BE-4 | 30% lower, according to the company |
| Parts count | 50% fewer, according to the company |
| Manufacturing detail | More than 65% produced through additive manufacturing |
| Assembly claim | Less than one day for assembly |
How It Compares with BE-4
Blue Origin says Northstar increases thrust from the BE-4’s 640,000 pounds-force to 715,000 pounds-force while reducing mass and parts count. A lighter engine can improve vehicle performance, but the practical benefit depends on reliability, certification, production quality and how the engine is integrated into a complete launch system. A larger headline thrust number alone does not guarantee a successful launch.
The company describes Northstar as using a liquid-oxygen/liquefied-natural-gas propellant combination and an oxygen-rich staged-combustion cycle. It also says the engine moved from programme approval to development testing in 11 months. Blue Origin had not announced a first flight date for Northstar at the time of this report.
New Glenn’s GS3 Third Stage
The Northstar announcement arrived alongside news about a third stage called GS3 for New Glenn. Blue Origin says GS3 could support direct deployment of satellite constellations to geostationary orbit and heavy-lift science or exploration missions. The company also described a future cislunar mission, but launch timing and mission performance should be treated as programme targets until independently demonstrated.
Why the Story Matters Beyond Space Fans
Rocket-engine manufacturing has wider effects on industrial design, advanced materials, additive manufacturing and supply chains. If Northstar reaches operational service, faster assembly and fewer parts could help Blue Origin expand production. The next milestones to watch are testing, qualification, flight integration and an official launch schedule.
