Quick Facts
Introduction
Lahore remains under heavy smog as Punjab cities report dangerous AQI levels. See the latest readings, why air worsens and how to protect your family.
Stand on any main road in Lahore this week and you will not need an app to tell you the air is bad. Thick smog has hidden landmarks including Minar-e-Pakistan and the Badshahi Mosque, hospitals are seeing patients with breathing and eye problems, and Lahore smog AQI readings have become part of the daily routine for millions of people. Other cities across Punjab are facing the same thing, and in several the readings have been worse than Lahore's.

Latest AQI Readings Across Punjab
| City | AQI reported on Sunday |
|---|---|
| Nankana Sahib | 685 |
| Dera Ghazi Khan | 611 |
| Jhang | 498 |
| Multan | 301 |
| Gujranwala | 296 |
| Faisalabad | 294 |
| Lahore | 291 |
Lahore's numbers have swung sharply through the week. The Express Tribune reported 535 early on Monday morning, IQAir showed 447 on Tuesday, according to Arab News, and on Thursday the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency put the city at 312 at 11am, with readings ranging from 212 near Wagah to 449 in Kahna Nau. That spread within a single city is why two apps can show different figures at the same time.
What Do AQI Numbers Mean?
The table below uses the widely followed US air quality scale. Pakistani agencies and monitoring services may label the bands differently, so always check the health advice that comes with the reading.
| AQI range | Category |
|---|---|
| 0 to 50 | Good |
| 51 to 100 | Moderate |
| 101 to 150 | Unhealthy for sensitive groups |
| 151 to 200 | Unhealthy |
| 201 to 300 | Very unhealthy |
| 301 and above | Hazardous |
Why Smog Gets So Bad in November
Abdullah Nayyar Sheikh, director general of Punjab's Environmental Protection Agency, told Reuters that falling temperatures since the start of November have caused a temperature inversion. In simple terms, a layer of warmer air sits above colder air near the ground and acts like a lid. Very low wind speeds have then prevented pollutants from dispersing.
That trapped air fills up with emissions from vehicles, construction sites and crop waste burning. The pollution also crosses borders, and Delhi has been struggling at the same time. Reports warned that Diwali fireworks across the border could add to the problem this weekend.
Is the Air Getting Better or Worse?
This has become a political argument too. Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb cited an analysis by the Pakistan Air Quality Initiative covering 26 monitoring locations, which showed average PM2.5 in Lahore falling from 136.3 micrograms per cubic metre in October 2025 to 100.1 in October 2026, a drop of about 27%.
That is an improvement worth recognising, but it does not change what people are breathing in November. For context, the World Health Organization's 24-hour guideline for PM2.5 is 15 micrograms per cubic metre. Experts quoted by Pakistan Today also caution that weather and pollution blown in from elsewhere play a big role, and that satellite fire counts alone cannot explain Lahore's smog.
How to Protect Yourself and Your Family
- Wear a proper mask outdoors. An N95 or KN95 filters fine particles far better than a cloth or loose surgical mask.
- Cut unnecessary travel, and avoid congested roads, as authorities have advised.
- Keep doors and windows shut during the worst hours, often early morning and late evening.
- Avoid outdoor exercise when readings are high, and be especially careful with children.
- Do not burn rubbish or leaves, and get vehicles tuned so they do not add to the smoke.
- Protect your eyes. Rinse them with clean water if they sting, and do not rub them.
Keeping Indoor Air Cleaner
Most people spend the worst smog days indoors, so it is worth thinking about the air inside the house. Fine particles still get in through gaps around doors and windows. Sealing the worst of those gaps helps, and so does avoiding extra smoke indoors, such as cigarettes, incense and frying with the windows shut.
If you can afford one, an air purifier with a true HEPA filter is the most effective option for a bedroom. Choose one sized for the room, and keep the door closed while it runs so it is not trying to clean the whole house. Change the filter as the manufacturer recommends, because a clogged filter does very little. Plants look nice, but they will not meaningfully clean smog from a room.
Advice for Schools, Commuters and Outdoor Workers
Children breathe faster than adults and their lungs are still developing, so outdoor assembly and sports are best moved indoors on high-AQI days. Follow official instructions from your school or the Punjab government on timings and closures, since these can change quickly during smog season.
Motorcycle riders and people who work outside, including construction workers, traffic police and street vendors, are exposed for far longer than most. Arab News has reported construction workers struggling in the conditions. A well-fitted mask matters most for these groups, along with regular breaks away from heavy traffic where possible. Drivers should use low-beam headlights and allow extra braking distance when visibility falls, particularly on motorways early in the morning.
When to See a Doctor
Children, older people, pregnant women and anyone with asthma, heart disease or lung conditions are most at risk. Seek medical help for shortness of breath, chest tightness, continuous coughing or wheezing that does not settle. If you have a prescribed inhaler or heart medicine, keep it with you and do not change the dose without advice.

FAQs
What is Lahore's AQI today?
Daily Times reported 291 on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Readings change throughout the day, so check a live monitor for current values.
Which Punjab city had the highest AQI?
Nankana Sahib recorded 685 in the Sunday report, followed by Dera Ghazi Khan at 611.
Why does smog increase in November?
Cooler temperatures create a temperature inversion that traps pollution close to the ground, and low wind stops it from dispersing.
Which mask is best for smog?
An N95 or KN95 mask that fits closely offers much better protection against fine particles than a cloth mask.
